DRAFTDAY!
DANIEL JEREMIAH (NFL.COM)
Myles Murphy Clemson · Edge · Junior
I wouldn’t rule out Hendon Hooker going to New Orleans if he’s still available. But in this case, the team fills a need off the edge and lets the Derek Carr era begin without a first-round rookie passer in the fold.
ERIC EDHOLM (NFL.COM)
Mazi Smith, Michigan · DT · Junior
The Saints have long favored mass and length in their defensive linemen, which is why I went with Smith over, say, Calijah Kancey. Bryan Bresee might be another option here, but Smith checks a lot of boxes for New Orleans. He might never fill up the box score, but he can help occupy blockers and close down running lanes and passing windows.
Bucky Brooks (NFL.com)
Calijah Kancey, Pittsburgh · DT · Junior
Putting an energetic defender beside Cam Jordan could help the Saints’ defense spark a playoff run in 2023. Kancey is a relentless pass rusher with the first-step quickness and burst to create problems on passing downs.
Charles Davis (NFL.com)
Bryan Bresee, Clemson · DT · Sophomore
A highly impressive player at Clemson when healthy, Bresee’s best is ahead of him after some difficult recent years.
LANCE ZIERLEIN (NFL.COM)
Brian Branch, Alabama · DB · Junior
Branch is one of the most consistent defenders in this entire draft and offers the versatility to play as a nickel or at either safety position. With his football intelligence and toughness as a tackler, it will be hard to keep him off the field as a rookie.
CHAD REUTER (NFL.COM)
Myles Murphy, Clemson · Edge · Junior
Murphy could very well be the Greg Rousseau of this draft class, possessing good overall athleticism but lacking the dominant play and pure twitch many teams want at the position. The Saints have picked similar defensive ends in the past, though, and Murphy would replace Marcus Davenport.
CHRIS TRAPASSO (CBS)
Myles Murphy, Clemson · Edge · Junior
Murphy is the logical replacement for Marcus Davenport in the Saints defense. He’s a big, physical, athletic, Davenport type.
JOSH EDWARDS (CBS)
Keion White, DL, Georgia Tech, Senior
The Keion White to New Orleans selection is probably getting a bit repetitive for Saints fans, but White is the type of player who the franchise has gone for late in the first round.
RYAN WILSON (CBS)
Keion White, EDGE, Georgia Tech, Senior
New Orleans signed a few interior defenders in free agency to replace Shy Tuttle and David Onyemata. Mazi Smith is a wide body who will upgrade the run defense.
KYLE STACKPOLE (CBS)
Keion White, EDGE, Georgia Tech, Senior
The Saints select Keion White to help fill the void left by departing free agent Marcus Davenport. New Orleans bets on his versatility and upside.
