Saints Reportedly Offer Drew Brees Richest Contract in NFL History

The New Orleans Saints have finally caved in and made Drew Brees an offer he cannot refuse.

According to Mike Triplett of The Times-Picayune, the franchise and star quarterback are on the verge of agreeing to a five-year deal worth somewhere between $19.2 and $20 million per season, which would be the wealthiest contract in NFL history.

The two parties have until July 16 to hammer out the exact parameters of this deal; otherwise, Brees would have to play the year out on the franchise tag amount of $16.4 million and could not negotiate a new contract until after the season.

The 33-year-old signal caller should gladly accept the Saints offer, but his agent could be working to squeeze a few more guaranteed dollars from the organization up until the deadline.

Considering just how long these contract negotiations have dragged on for, Saints fans everywhere will let out a collective sigh of relief when Brees’ signature goes on the documents.

Regardless of whether Brees ends up making around $96 million or $100 million over the life of the deal, he’s going to get fair market value for his services.

New England Patriots’ star Tom Brady signed a five-year, $78.5 million contract back in 2010, and the Denver Broncos offered Peyton Manning five-years, $96 million to become their franchise QB.

The basement for Brees’ new contract is exactly what Manning is hauling in (who is currently the highest-paid player in history), and his ceiling is an unprecedented amount of money for a football player.

It’s a win-win situation for both parties and one that should finally be resolved in the coming week.
